| Sudden cardiac
arrest is the leading cause of death in adults. When a person experiences
sudden cardiac arrest, their heart stops its normal beating and quivers instead.
This quivering is called ventricular fibrillation. You've probably heard
it referred to on medical television shows as "V-Fib." Only one thing -- an electric shock from a defibrillator -- can reset the heart's rhythm. The sooner such a shock is delivered, the greater the patient's chances are at survival. The Maumelle Fire Department responds to all cardiac medical calls with a defibrillator. However, CPR extends the window in which successful defibrillation can occur. CPR administered while Maumelle firefighters are enroute doubles the chances of patient survival. By learning CPR yourself, you could help save a life. |

Classes The Maumelle Fire Department can provide firefighters to instruct your group or organization in the steps of CPR and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). These classes include certification through the American Heart Association. The classes, which are usually completed in one evening, include classroom instruction, video presentations and hands-on experience using mannequins and an AED simulator. Organizations that have benefitted from these classes include Target Distribution Center, Academics Plus Charter School and the staff of the Naylor Aquatics Center. To schedule a class for your group, call our station at (501) 851-1337 during normal business hours. |
