August 28, 2011:
One apartment damaged in Pine Forest Drive fire
Shortly before midnight Sunday (August 28), five career firefighters staffing Engine 1 and Engine 2 responded to a report of a possible fire inside Apartment 14 of the Pine Forest Circle apartment at 301 Pine Forest Drive. When the first engine arrived on scene, black smoke was showing from an upstairs window.
An engine company was requested from North Little Rock and local, off-duty Maumelle firefighters were recalled to duty. Firefighters on scene stretched a hose line to the second floor, where they found thick smoke upstairs and fire in a front bedroom. The fire was quickly knocked down, preventing it from extending to adjoining apartments.
The on-duty firefighters were soon joined by seven volunteer firefighters. After all personnel insured the fire was out, neighboring apartments were ventilated to clear them of smoke and hazardous gasses. Salvage covers were thrown downstairs to prevent damage from water leaking through the floor.
North Little Rock Engine 4 was sent to Station 1 to provide coverage for the City of Maumelle until off-duty personnel could respond and staff reserve apparatus.
Four families were temporarily displaced by the fire with some occupants spending the night in a vacant apartment within the complex and others using hotel vouchers provided by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but is still under investigation.

July 29, 2011:
Three volunteers complete Firefighter II certification
Three Maumelle volunteer firefighters recently obtained Firefighter II certification from the Arkansas Fire Academy and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
The certification test was the culmination of more than 300 hours of training for Volunteer Firefighters Hunter Butler, Shea Furr and Blake Sasse. The three joined the fire department last summer and have attended multiple training sessions each month on a variety of topics that include emergency medical care and hazardous materials in addition to all facets of firefighting.
Arkansas state law only requires 40 hours of introductory training for volunteer firefighters. However, the Maumelle Fire Department provides much of the same curriculum to their volunteer firefighters as is provided to the career firefighters that attend rookie school at the Arkansas Fire Academy.
The Maumelle Fire Department currently has a roster of 17 volunteers who are dispatched, on average, three to four times each week to respond to emergencies and supplement the career firefighter or to provide coverage for the city when career firefighters are handling other incidents.

Water leak yields MFD response, holiday for students
Shortly before 8am Monday (June 6) Engines 1 & 2, each staffed by two firefighters, and Fire Marshal John Payne responded to the Maumelle Middle School for a report of a water main break.
School was dismissed for the day after Maumelle Water Management personnel initially thought the leak was from the principal water main leading to the school, which would have rendered the bathrooms and water fountains inoperable. It was later determined that the leak was from water line dedicated to the school's fire protection system.
Firefighters were positioned to supply water to the school's sprinkler system, if necessary, until all of the students were evacuated and released for the day.

Welder sparks fire at Kimberly Clark facility
At approximately 5:21 pm on Saturday (June 4), five career firefighters staffing Engine 1 and Engine 2 responded along with volunteers to a report of a fire at the Kimberly Clark facility at 500 Murphy Dr. Upon arrival, personnel were told a fire had been started by welders. Once inside, firefighters found smoke coming from an interior wall.
As firefighters on the interior attempted to gain access to the burning materials behind the wall, firefighters on the exterior laddered the roof of the building to gain access to check for fire spread. North Little Rock Engine 4 was requested to respond for assistance. A MEMS ambulance was also dispatched to help with the rehabilitation of firefighters.
After finding and extinguishing the fire inside the wall, Maumelle firefighters turned the property over to Kimberly Clark staff.
Local off-duty firefighters were recalled to duty to provide additional personnel on scene and to staff reserve apparatus to provide coverage for the city.

MFD answers 19 runs in less than five hours Saturday
Maumelle firefighters answered a total of 21 calls for service during Saturday night's rainstorm -- including 19 in a span of less than five hours. Many of the incidents were flood assessments where firefighters investigated reports of flooding inside structures possibly trapping residents. A number of people were helped to safety from flooded residences and a large number were given instructions to shelter in place until flood waters could recede. Two separate motorists were rescued after being trapped in their cars amidst rising water.
Counting three incidents made earlier in the shift, the fire department's C-shift made 24 calls during its 24-hour tour of duty from 7am Saturday until 7am Sunday. This is the second-busiest tour ever for Maumelle firefighters. The record was set August 11, 2006 when B-shift answered 25 calls (including 20 related to a fast moving storm).

A two-vehicle accident sent Monday (March 28) sent an UPS truck off Crystal Hill Road and onto a broken gas line. No one was seriously injured in the accident.

Crystal Hill Road accident sends UPS truck into gas meter
Eight Maumelle firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 and Chief of Department George Glenn responded at approximately 1:25 pm Monday (March 28) to the 11400 block of Crystal Hill Road for a report of a vehicle accident with injuries. Upon arrival, fire personnel found two vehicles involved -- including an UPS delivery truck that came to rest on top of a broken natural gas meter.
With natural gas leaking beneath the truck, firefighters prepared for the possibility of a fire. The closest hydrant was only feet away from the broken gas line. A second hydrant was more than 1,000 feet away, so Oak Grove firefighters responded as mutual with a 3,000-gallon water tanker. Maumelle volunteer firefighters were dispatched to provide coverage to the city. One volunteer responded.
Personnel from both departments stood by as CenterPoint Energy workers shut off the flow of gas and tow truck operators moved the truck off the broken meter without incident. Afterward, firefighters offloaded packages from the wrecked truck on to a separate UPS truck to be delivered.
One person involved in the accident complained of injuries and was treated by firefighters and Metropolitan EMS (MEMS) personnel.

Probationary Firefighter William McCullar
Probationary Firefighter William McCullar connects supply hose to a fire hydrant during orientation training with firefighters on C-Shift. His hiring fills an existing vacancy and returns to the department to 21 line personnel.

Maumelle welcomes newest career firefighter
Probationary Firefighter William McCullar is the newest career member of the Maumelle Fire Department having first reported for duty on Monday, March 21st.
McCullar, a native of Olive Branch, MS, is a 2010 graduate of Ole Miss with a degree in Homeland Security. Prior to making the fire service his career, he worked in Mississippi and Arkansas as an emergency services dispatcher. An Eagle Scout, McCullar said he made firefighting his career of choice several years ago after serving as a volunteer firefighter. He chose Maumelle, he says, because of the department's youth and potential for growth.
McCullar is currently detailed to working days until he reports to the Arkansas Fire Academy in East Camden for Rookie School in May. His hiring fills a vacancy created earlier this year with the departure of a career firefighter. Three new firefighter positions have been authorized and will be filled later in the year.

Outside electrical box causes Stoneledge Dr. house fire
Maumelle Engines 1 & 2, each staffed by two career firefighters, and six volunteer firefighters responded shortly before 1 AM on March 16 for a report of a house on fire at 4 Stoneledge Dr. Upon arrival, firefighters found fire showing from the side of the house near an electrical box. A hose line was stretched and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The fire apparently began inside the electrical box, extended to the siding and into the wall of the residence and up to the second floor. Damage was contained to this area. Fire Marshal John Payne was dispatched to respond to conduct the investigation. The Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department provided assistance and off-duty career firefighters were recalled to duty to provide coverage for the city.

Firefighters make short trip to extinguish car fire
    Location is everything.
Five career firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 responded Friday, March 11th for a vehicle fire in front of 1300 Union Court -- just 200 yards from Maumelle Fire Station 1. Engine Company 1 was in quarters at the time of the fire and quickly extinguished the blaze.
One patient was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns before being transported to an area hospital by Metropolitan EMS (MEMS). Two volunteer firefighters also responded to the incident. Division Chief John Payne responded to conduct the investigation.

Small fire temporarily closes local convenience store
Maumelle Engines 1 & 2, each staffed by two career firefighters, responded shortly at 9 a.m. Monday morning (March 7) for a report of a fire inside the E-Z Mart at 760 Edgewood Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters found moderate smoke throughout the business and fire burning inside one of the bathrooms.
The fire, which appeared to start in the ceiling, was contained to the room where it began. However, the business was temporarily closed while awaiting repair work and a health department inspection.
Chief of Department Georg Glenn and Division Chief John Payne also responded to the fire. Volunteer firefighters were dispatched, but none responded.

March 5, 2011:
Firefighters respond amidst lightning for shed fire
Four career firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 as well as six volunteer firefighters responded during the thunderstorm early Saturday morning to a report of an out-building on fire on Weatherwood Lane.
Upon arrival, Engines 1 & 2 found a fully-engulfed shed-type building behind the residence at 38 Weatherwood Lane. Engine 1 stretched a handline to the back yard to begin extinguishing the fire. Engine 2 laid a large-diameter supply hose in to the scene from the hydrant.
The fire was extinguished, the area overhauled and turned back over to the property owner in approximately 45 minutes. Several neighbors reported a lightning strike immediately before the fire was discovered and that is believed to be the cause of the fire.

March 1, 2011:
Fire outside sends smoke into Stoneledge residence
Seven career firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 responded to a report of smoke inside a residence at 33 Stoneledge Drive shortly before 7am Tuesday (Mar 1). With the incident occurring during shift change, four firefighters going off duty also responded with Brush 1.
Upon arrival, firefighters met with the homeowner, who stated that he found smoke in his kitchen when waking up for the morning. The homeowner investigated the cause and found a small fire burning outside near the foundation of his home. The fire was extinguished with a hose prior to the fire department's arrival.
Firefighters gained access to the crawl space of the home and checked to make sure the fire did not extend into or underneath the house. During their investigation, it appeared that the fire was likely caused by low-voltage electrical wiring used for landscape lighting. The smoke in the residence was cleared using a positive pressure fan before units cleared from the scene.
The Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to Maumelle Station 1 and provided coverage for the city during the incident.

MFD responds to report of smoke in restaurant
Five career firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 responded to a report of smoke in the dining room of the Zaxby's restaurant at 104 Carnahan Drive shortly after 8:30 pm Sunday night (Feb 27). Volunteer firefighters were also paged and responded with Truck 1.
Upon arrival, firefighters found moderate smoke in the building. As part of their investigation, the ladders were placed to gain access to the roof. Personnel used thermal imaging cameras, which are able to see and measure temperature changes, to trace the cause of the smoke to an overheated motor in a heating & air conditioning unit on the roof.
Power to the overheated unit was turned off and the building was ventilated to clear the smoke and odor before firefighters cleared the scene.

Cake pan rescue a first for Maumelle firefighters
The Maumelle Fire Department has rescued trapped citizens from a number of things -- mostly commonly wrecked cars, stuck elevators and locked doors. The members of Engine 2 A-Shift added "cake pan" to the list on February 12, when they were dispatched to assist the mother of a toddler with an angel food cake pan stuck around his neck on Navajo Trail.
The 17-month-old managed to stick his head through the hole in the circular pan, but his mom was unable to remove it in the same manner. Firefighters used hand tools to spread apart the pan and free the child without incident.

MFD finds 'chimney fire' burning underneath home
Dispatched to a report of a chimney fire February 9 at 2 Hickory Lane, the five firefighters staffing Engines 1 & 2 found no smoke or fire visible from the residence upon their arrival.
During their investigation, however, they found an area burning beneath the floor in the home's crawlspace which was quickly extinguished. Firefighters were on scene for a little more than a hour completing their overhaul duties by removing charred wood and soaking surrounding areas with water.
Chief of Department George Glenn also responded to the scene and volunteer firefighters responded to Station 2 to standby and provide coverage for the city.

Responding during snow brings new traffic hazards
One of the hallmarks of the firefighter profession is that you must be prepared to see anything imaginable. While responding a report of a dryer on fire in a residence at 15 Bouriese Circle on February 9, Maumelle firefighters encountered a unique sight along Maumelle Boulevard -- a car-powered snow skier.
